The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Federal grants programs (Program) are excellent sources of seed and early stage funding for research and development (R&D), proof of concept, and commercialization.  

In the five year period ending fiscal year 2012 the Programs awarded 32,000 grants valued at $12 billion.  Florida institutions and businesses were awarded 876 grants and $286 million or 2.4% of total dollars awarded during this period.

In 2012 Florida institutions and small businesses received 159 awards and grants of $58 million.  Florida’s share of Program awards was 2.6 percent of total funds distributed, ranking 10th compared to other States.

This report includes national and Florida Program activity between 2008 and 2012.  Florida information includes awards by Federal agency and Enterprise Florida region.   It also includes a summary of longitudinal studies measuring Program business formation and job creation, and a recent benchmark of applicant success rates and timelines for the disbursement of funds.
